Managing Leadership^®

I was recently tagged by Michael Wade, the Execupundit, to provide a report of the books I’m currently reading or have on my shelf to be taken up in turn. Also, it seems that one of the elements of this assignment is to excerpt the sixth through eighth sentences on page 123 of the currently read book, so I’ll do that also.

Right now I’m reading the rather remarkable Liberal Fascism, by Jonah Goldberg. There certainly is no mistaking his thesis. I am enjoying the book so far, but I must say that while it is fascinating in its own right, it also offers strong evidence for the wisdom of reading widely. In the case of this book, doing so provides one some independent means for assessing his tightly and energetically argued point of view.

Here is the excerpt:

How could it be otherwise, given Wilson’s own warnings about the enemy within? In 1915, in his third annual message to Congress, he declared, “The gravest threats against our national peace and safety have been uttered within our own borders. There are citizens of the United States, I blush to admit, born under other flags . . . who have poured the poison of disloyalty into the very arteries of our national life; who have sought to bring the authority and good name of our Government into contempt, to destroy our industries wherever they thought it effective for their vindictive purposes to strike at them, and to debase our politics to the uses of foreign intrigue.”

There’s a pattern, for you, that keeps reappearing in the fabric of national discourse.
